Castries, St Lucia

st lucia cruise ship port

Board a comfortable catamaran and begin the 2 hour sailing from Castries to Soufriere. The St Lucia Food and Rum Tour takes you on a culinary magical mystery tour to sample some of the island’s most delectable treats in some of its most beautiful spots. Further up the coast is Pigeon Island, which isn’t exactly an island now that it’s connected to the mainland with a man-made road, but is a lovely place nevertheless! Either hop into a taxi to get here, or take the 1A bus as far as Gros Islet and then walk along the beach to the park’s entrance.

Dining In Castries – St. Lucia

Public transportation in St. Lucia often does not run on a set schedule. At GPH, we believe that one of the values that continues to make us successful is that we have a global yet local perspective on port operations. Nowhere is this more evident than in our staff complement at each port. Our teams are comprised of residents – citizens of the destinations we serve who have a vested interest, by birth, in the success of the port and the destination. As a result, all St. Lucia Air & Sea Ports Authority employees who may be interested in working with GPH will be given priority for employment under competitive terms.

While still on the North Western coast of the island, take a water taxi, a bus or a taxi ride to Rodney Bay Marina—a beautiful wide arc of blue waters. Rodney Bay is the island’s beehive, and you can’t miss its entrance from the road. Start with the museum, then move on to the park to explore St. Lucia’s nature. Climb the fort for stunning 360-degree views of the island with perfect seascapes on the horizon. If you get hungry, head over to Jambe de Bois (Wooden Leg), a popular restaurant named after the famous pirate. The new "dolphin berth" is located at Pointe Serafine Cruise Terminal.

South Caribbean Ports

With its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture, St Lucia offers something for everyone. Although Castries is the main cruise port in St. Lucia, some ships may have an additional stop next to Soufriere to pick up passengers on full-day tours to the famous Pitons and other attractions close by. The beaches are stunning and relatively close to the cruise port in Castries.

This island was once used as a base by the original peg-legged pirate, François Le Clerc, and later became the site of a fort built by the British naval officer Admiral George Rodney. At the entrance to the beach is the beautiful Stolen Time, an adults only, all-inclusive wellness resort. While you can’t just wander in off the street and order a drink from the bar, it is possible to buy a day pass to the hotel, which is pricey but includes all food, drink and facilities on site.

The idyllic combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and exciting activities make St Lucia a must-visit destination for cruise enthusiasts. St Lucia, with its stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and wide array of attractions, is a dream destination for travelers. Whether you’re arriving at the St Lucia cruise port for a day or spending a few days exploring the island, you’ll discover a paradise filled with adventure, relaxation, and rich experiences.

However, due to how far the stables are from the cruise port, making good preparations and arriving early at the port will help cruisers get the best out of their time in port. This ride happens on a suspended open-ended gondola that slowly takes you on a tour of the forest’s canopy with a guide who explains the local tropical flora and fauna. Enjoy this activity as you get panoramic views of the rainforest and its inhabitants. On such a tour, you get a chance to snorkel at Anse Chastanet coral garden.

Another magnificent example of Victorian architecture, the estate is 122 years old and offers a wide variety of facilities to enjoy. The estate has been home to Caribelle Batik for almost 40 years and houses a batik studio offering batik-making demonstrations. English is the official language, but locals often speak Kweyol, a French-influenced patois based. (Check xe.com for current exchange rates.) You can generally use American dollars anywhere on the island, although you may receive change in local currency.

Marigot Bay – Situated on the western coast of St Lucia, a 30-minute drive from Castries cruise port, Marigot Bay is a magnificent natural harbor with deep, crystal clear water and several beautiful, sugar-white beaches. Surrounded by densely forested hills from three sides, Marigot Bay boasts luxurious hotels, beach resorts, sophisticated restaurants, and a multitude of picturesque yachts, catamarans, and boats moored in its marina. Reduit Beach – Located a 20-minute drive north of Castries, Reduit Beach is a lively stretch of sandy beach tucked in the southern part of Rodney Bay.

The first shopping opportunity that all cruise ship passengers will see is the Pointe Seraphine shopping centre with its many stores and duty-free shopping opportunities. While St Lucia generally feels pretty safe, there have been incidents of violent attacks on tourists. Be especially wary at isolated beaches and beauty spots, and leave valuables on the ship. This could be a boat trip with beach/snorkelling time (see above for best spots); a land-based tour; or – arguably the best option – by sea one way, by road the other. Bear in mind that the Pitons look at their most spectacular from the sea, but you can get fantastic views of them from land too.

There are so many other sites, landmarks, attractions and activities to enjoy in St. Lucia that cruise travelers visiting the island always find something exciting to do and see. Most cruise ships of all sizes dock in a small bay by Castries - the capital of St Lucia. There are two main piers (and Terminals) in St Lucia's main cruise port. The Pointe Seraphine on the northern side and the pier at La Place Carenage right downtown - the exit gates literally open to the main street. A decent percentage of the island -- some 19,000 acres -- is protected as part of the St. Lucia National Rain Forest. Pointe Seraphine is the St Lucia cruise port on the opposite side of the little bay, and from here it’ll take you about 20 minutes on foot to reach the centre of Castries.

I still haven’t managed to visit, but from my experiences in Dominica and Iceland, I’d already advise bringing dark swimwear to avoid any stains! The other option to reach the Gros Piton Nature Trail is to book a tour in advance. This is one of the best-rated, and although it doesn’t include the entrance fee to the park, you’ll be in safe hands with this highly-rated guide.

It is best to pre-book taxis to save stressing over the return to the port. It is possible to travel by local minivans, however, this is not as time-effective and there is some trekking involved once you arrive. A 20-minute cab journey from the cruise port will take you to the hugely popular Reduit Beach in Rodney Bay for roughly $25 one way. GPH is known worldwide as a reliable partner of governments and cruise line brands around the world.
